To probe the racial tensions gripping South Africa, Sawyer visited mines, schools, townships and many other institutions to examine why so many people of all descriptions worry about their futures. Sawyer found that, despite what appears on the surface to be tremendous progress in the negotiations between the white government and the African National Congress, the people correctly perceive the pitfalls ahead. His reporting penetrated The African National Congress and its rivals as well as the conflict among the factions.
